Postmortem Thoughts after the Jam

I created this game over the course of 16-17 hours.

The theme of the global game jam this year was "make me laugh". I also decided to go for the optional side missions of making a game playable with one hand, incorporating steamboat willy, and rewarding the player upon death.

Following this, I tried to think of  what I could do that would be funny.  Eventually, I landed on the idea of a racing game where the player would inevitably end up colliding into physics objects with strange mass values. I also wanted to add a slough of silly sound effects to make the effect funnier.

After working for a LONG time on just that functionality, I was not impressed with the overall humor factor of the result. I tried to add an intro cutscene where Pablo would have a cinematic shot, much like how one would shoot a car. With the limited time and my limited experience, the effect was not really what I wanted.

I unintentionally had a bug occur where the player's scale was stretched out when respawning. This made me laugh out loud, so I decided to incorporate it into the game for my "reward upon death" challenge. There is a 1/3 chance of this happening upon death, and a guaranteed effect upon completion of the race.

Overall I ran into a lot of hick-ups during this challenge, and I created quick work-arounds to make it functional. Given this state of development, the blueprints are ATTROSCIOUS to look at and by no means best practice.

But I suppose that's just what happens in game jams. This was my first game jam, so I had to learn that.

I did learn some new tricks though, of course!

     - I experimented with using splines to create roads and shape landscaping.

     - Practices the implementation of landscape layers

     - Worked with audio programs quickly to get sound effects

     - Worked with the idea of created a game that is controlled with one hand.
